The final production is now being finalized on to DVD by Dave Han.

The Original Proposal

Summary
Using the media of multi-channel Network Television with VBI datacasting, DVD-Video, and the Internet, we will demonstrate a multi stream narrative as well as an interactive documentary.
The Proposal
Using the skills we have learned in our respective Ryerson programs, the knowledge we have gained from our collaborative Research and Development Groups, and the leading edge equipment within the Rogers Communications Centre, we will create a short Parallel Perspective Story and an Interactive Documentary describing its creation. The Parallel Perspective Story will have five original streams that can be simulcasted using the five available Ryerson Channels, as well as published on DVD-Video. The Interactive Documentary will be published on DVD-Video, and also broadcast on a single television channel using VBI datacasting to include interactive elements. As well, connections to the Internet site will contain more in-depth streamed and animated interactive content.
What is a Parallel Perspective Story?
Films such as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and the Red Violin have all effectively demonstrated the interest value of following a common narrative from different character perspectives. The Parallel Perspective Story is the next evolution of such a technique. Instead of presenting the same moment in time repeatedly from different perspectives, the Parallel Perspective Story uses modern technology to allow the viewer to switch between perspectives, as the time line remains constant. Each stream would be a complete production including a variety of angles, editing, compositing, soundtrack, …etc. Although each stream will follow the same story, using the same locations and the same actors, the different perspectives of the characters will create different emphasis and interest in each stream. It will be up to the viewer to piece together the whole story.
Essentially, it is a new form of video that is a more accurate representation of life, where everyone is the main character, and your own personal values will shape how you interpret the event. In the presentation, the viewer will finally be able to play the role of the director, choosing which stream to view as he or she sees fit. We feel this represents at least a part of the future of interactive media.

What is an Interactive Documentary?

Unlike a narrative, the genre of documentary is designed to inform and educate the audience about a subject from real life. Some viewers will have different interests as well as varying degrees of interest. By making a documentary interactive, each viewer will have the opportunity to explore the subject at his or her leisure, depending on the person’s preferences. One viewer may watch only a brief overview of the subject, while another may choose to observe only a specific element of the subject.
The Interactive Documentary is a more effective and engaging way of communicating information to an audience.
The Importance of this Project
This project will set an example of the new capabilities of communications technologies and will illustrate some of their many new worthwhile applications. Information gained from the experience of creating this project can be directly applied to the Radio and Television Program, Image Arts and the developing Multimedia Minor.
The project will demonstrate many of the modern facilities at Ryerson and the progressive nature of the school. For this reason, the final product can be used as an engaging and entertaining promotional device.
